What is the schedule for The Civitas School?

On-site arrival and move-in for The Civitas School begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2010, at the Dellenback Center in Washington, D.C. Welcome events begin at 6 p.m., with food and opening remarks. The night ends with viewing the fireworks after dusk from the roof deck overlooking the Capitol!

Monday through Friday, scholars participate in a cycle of worship, reflection, coursework, shared meals, and evening coffeehouse conversations with Dr. Gideon Strauss, CEO of the Center for Public Justice. On Thursday evening, participants will attend the Center's annual Kuyper Lecture, to be presented this year by Michael J. Gerson.

Rev. Jim Belcher, author of Deep Church and pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (Newport Beach, CA), will serve as resident chaplain.

The Civitas School finishes at noon on Friday, July 9.

What courses are offered at The Civitas School?

In 2010, three courses offered by scholars in their areas of expertise are available through The Civitas School:

  • Grace and Civility (Dr. Strauss)
  • The Biblical Theme of Justice (Dr. Herbert) 
  • Institutions and Religious Freedom (Dr. Carlson-Thies)

Scholars in The Civitas School may take up to two courses for academic credit.

What is included and what does it cost to attend The Civitas School?

The Civitas School is a living-learning community. Apartment-style housing with full kitchen and laundry, daily breakfast and lunch, two evening meals (Sunday and Wednesday), Internet access, and the opportunity to engage with and learn from top instructors are all included for $850. Please note that dinner is on your own on three evenings (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday), although an on-site coffeehouse has a selection of items for sale each evening. 

Private room and board for couples or families is available at an additional cost. 

The costs associated with receiving credit through your academic institution are not included.

How do I receive academic credit for The Civitas School?

Accepted applicants will be contacted by Stephanie Summers to discuss the specific details regarding degree program requirements and payment, as they vary based on academic institution, degree program, and level. If you have questions about this during the application process, please contact Stephanie.

How does the application process work?

The application includes a non-refundable $100 deposit. Applicants will be notified of their status two weeks after their application is received. Upon notification of acceptance, scholars must provide the remaining $750 to the Center for Public Justice. Payment in full is required prior to June 1, 2010.
