Civitas 2010: Graceful Politics
Sunday, July 4–Friday, July 9, 2010
Dellenback Center on Capitol Hill
Washington, D.C.
Why Civitas 2010?
Does the very phrase “graceful politics” cause you to sigh with longing? Do you consider yourself politically homeless? Do you hold deeply partisan convictions and want to explore those in terms of your faith? Do you wrestle with understanding what a Christian approach to politics in the context of our times might look like? Do you think our American politics demand a fresh leavening of civility and humility? Does the idea of engaging these questions in a community of peers and mentors sound enlivening?
If YES is the answer to any of these questions, Civitas 2010 is designed for you.
The schedule
Sunday, July 4, kicks off with an Independence Day party at 5:30 p.m., complete with food, opening remarks by Dr. Gideon Strauss, CEO of the Center for Public Justice, and a private concert by artists-in-residence Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken. Our night ends with viewing the fireworks from rooftop gardens overlooking the Capitol!
Monday through Friday, Civitas 2010 participants engage in a daily cycle of shared meals (breakfast and lunch are included), worship, reflection, lectures and discussion with speakers, and experiential trips to institutions on Capitol Hill. Expect to be part of Civitas 2010 from 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily. The afternoon of Wednesday, July 7, between lunch and dinner, is open for sightseeing. Thursday evening, Civitas 2010 participants will travel to enjoy food and hear Michael Gerson present the annual Kuyper Lecture sponsored by the Center for Public Justice. Civitas 2010 participants are encouraged to bring local friends and colleagues to the lecture.
